My American friends—
When you ban poetry, you ban civilization.
France will not stand idly by while the United States slips into… prose-only culture.
We have defended poetry for centuries.
We invented romance, élégance, and cafés where people pretend to read.
Do you think Baudelaire would accept this?
Do you think Victor Hugo would shrug and say,
“Eh, fewer stanzas, who cares?”
Non.
He would shout from the bell tower of Notre-Dame:
Liberté! Égalité! Poésie!
We will fight for your right to rhyme.
We will storm the White House with berets and metaphors.
We will liberate the haĂŻkus!
If America falls to monotony, the whole world suffers.
